As I embark upon my first year as Headmaster of the British International School, I remain ever mindful of my first visit to Phuket, just a little over 33 years ago. It is a hard place to forget, of course, but in my mind’s eye, Phuket is still as beautiful, as ever. I have been made to feel very welcome since I arrived and there is a reassuring familiarity about the British International School, and it is easy to sense the high energy and enthusiasm of the teaching staff and students.
I am already convinced that the unique cultural and environmental heritage of this location, as well as the commitment of the staff and students, will provide me with new learning opportunities and an outlet for my own creative energy. The opportunity to contribute to the development of this prestigious institution is a very real privilege and I am greatly looking forward to the many and varied challenges that lie ahead.
The British International School seeks to develop leaders for tomorrow, but this can only be achieved by acknowledging that tomorrow is an unknown destination, and will always be beyond reach. To embark on the journey safely requires a reliable moral compass, along with encouragement for curiosity and openness, and, of course, the ability to interpret and enjoy the scenery along the way. Surely, it is only in the uncertainty that each generation finds fulfillment. Therefore a school should be a place of exploration and opportunity, and not just a well worn track emerging out of the past and disappearing into the future. It should be a place that enables all students to identify their unique talents. Fundamentally, it should be a place of celebration, where each member of the community is able to learn about learning, and, most importantly of all, a place where it is ‘cool’ to take care of each other. This is our challenge. We invite you to join us on our journey.
With my very best wishes for the year ahead,
Neil Richards.
