British International School, Phuket is the largest international school in Phuket and a leading international school in South and East Asia. The National Curriculum for England, IGCSE and the IB Diploma are taught in English from pre-school to Year 13. We currently employ 110 overseas teachers.

Teaching vacancies for the school year will be advertised on this web site, the FOBISSEA website and at TES Job website in early December. The School will interview in Phuket and Bangkok by appointment and in London at the CIS fair in January.

Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and a post graduate teaching qualification or an Education Degree and a minimum of 2 years teaching experience. Knowledge of the English National Curriculum, IGCSE or IBDP will be advantageous.

International Teaching

If you haven’t taught overseas before you might like to consider whether you are the sort of person who is able to easily adapt to teaching in another country by considering how you would respond to the following general advice:

  • Learn as much as possible about the host country in advance so that have realistic expectations
  • Anticipate a challenging adjustment period of at least three months before making a decision about the move and whether you like it or not
  • Do not expect to be able to replicate your current lifestyle. Look for what is there, not for what isn’t
  • Always try to understand the host country perspective. It will be different!
  • Develop a tolerance for ambiguity and frustration by being flexible and open towards the new culture
  • Do not expect of the new culture the same sense of urgency or availability of conveniences
  • In all things be flexible
  • Look for ways to strengthen and maintain your enthusiasm
  • Maintain a sense of humour, but most importantly be ready to laugh at yourself
Contract benefits for overseas hired staff

  • Salary is paid in Thai baht. Tax is deducted in the region of 15-30% depending on earnings.
  • Initial contract is 2 years followed by 1 year contracts. (1 month signing on bonus is paid prior to a new contract)
  • A matched pension contribution of approximately 8.3% is payable annually in arrears.
  • Comprehensive medical insurance is provided for the teacher and their dependants.
  • Maximum freight allowance is 28,000 baht per contracted member of staff, 28,000 for the dependent spouse/partner, with one payment per family of 14,000 baht for all dependent children. Teachers relocating within Thailand are eligible for 50% of these allowances.
  • An allowance of 10,000 baht per teacher is paid in cash on arrival to go towards accommodation and other initial costs.
  • Economy airfares are provided for teachers and dependants from/to point of domicile at start and finish of contract.
  • Up to two school age dependants of the teacher who attend the school are eligible for full academic scholarships.
  • Boarding staff are housed on campus in accommodation as required by their responsibilities and duties, with subsidized utilities.
  • For those living off-site a housing allowance will be paid up to a maximum of 28 600 baht per month for couples and 21 500 baht per month for single teachers dependent on rent. The allowance will be added to the monthly income and taxed at the same rate.
