The golf season really started in style this weekend with the Faldo Series Qualifier event at Laguna GC, Phuket.
With the golf course in great shape and the predicted rain managing to hold off, we witnessed a great event with some superb performances.
The first day produced some high calibre golf, at the top level with BISP students, Toy (Napat Paramacharoenroj) and Mark (Vanchai Luangnitkul). In the Boys (U16 & U18) Toy was the star with a magnificent round of 65 (6 under par) – making the game look easy. Mark was close behind however, with a comeback (-4) on the back nine, leaving him with a total of 68 (3 under par).
By the end of the first day, Conor Kelly from Bangkok Patana school was in 3rd place with a one under 70, Sebastian Sawtell from BISP completed a credible 74 (+3) to leave him in 4th place, with Yoon Hoon also from BISP reaching 82.
On the girls side in the U16s, BISP’s Molly Yun led the way with 81 – playing her first competition for many months. Parinyawee Panno was one shot behind with 82.
In the younger divisions, Damon Dongwook and Filip Arnesten from BISP completed 79’s in the U12 division. These two players are improving rapidly and showed some great shots and talent during the event.
Nichapas Thawinwan (who has just recently joined the BISP Golf Academy) and Mint (Sasikarn Luangnitikul) shot 81 and 83 respectively, setting up a good contest for day 2.
They both handled themselves perfectly and really created some great excitement on the back nine.
It was so close, with Mark edging out Toy by one shot, both players showed great composure under pressure, with a short game exhibition on the back nine.
Mark’s total of 137 (-5) and Toy’s 138 (-4) means both BISP players qualified for the grand final in Vietnam in February 2018.
Conor Kelly (Bangkok Patana) was third on 140 (-2) with Sebastian Sawtell 4th on 153. Sebastian was playing 3 years above his age and will have gained valuable experience from this credible result.
Molly Yun finished 3rd overall in the girls event, following a superb effort throughout. With more tournament experience I’m sure she will be a winner soon. Parinyawee Panno had a great finish to qualify for the grand final on 159.
In the boys U12 division, Filip Arnesten from BISP was the deserved winner with some great golf on the back nine, with Damon Dongwook, another BISP student finishing 3 behind for the runner up spot. Both players have been working hard on their games and it was great to see them perform in a competitive environment. These players have great futures ahead in golf.
From the coach’s perspective, I’m very pleased with all of our golfers. Not only did we achieve great results, but everybody’s attitude, etiquette and behaviour was first class on and off the course. Many other spectators made comments to me about our players and were very complimentary.
At the BISP Golf Academy we have some excellent players and personalities, and I was very proud to be their coach during this event.
In the meantime, its time to analyse all the tournament data, practice and prepare for the next event.
Special thanks to everybody for all the kind support!
