On 23rd to 25th January, the British International School, Phuket (BISP) swim team headed to Bangkok to take part in the first ever FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) age group swimming championships, hosted at Shrewsbury International School.
FOBISIA’s swim competitions have traditionally formed part of a multi-disciplinary Games format, but this dedicated event provides a new platform for athletes who excel at swimming to compete against the best in the field.
Over 530 athletes from 19 of Southeast Asia’s top sporting schools competed in the 3 day event, with 60 events taking place in the school’s competition pool.
In a first for the competition, the girls had the opportunity to compete over 800 metres, with some of the boys taking part in a 1500m race.
In an outstanding display of swimming talent, the BISP team broke 32 Academy records, with Lushano Lamprecht breaking four Namibian National short course records. We also had over 80 swims that would rank in the top three times in the swimmers’ home countries.
We finished the competition as High Point Average Champions (the Highest Points Score average of all competitors on each swim team), in addition we won the Team Champions 15 & Over trophy for Boys and Girls combined.
In a stunning display of dominance, BISP won:
– 16 out of 16 races in the 13-14 year-old Girls Individual Events category (100%);
– 14 out of 16 in the 15 & Over Girls Individual Events category (a winning ratio of 87.5%);
– 13 out of 16 in the 15 & Over Boys Individual Events (81.25% win ratio);
– All of the 15 & Over Girls and Boys Relays (100%).
BISP Headmaster Mr Neil Richards flew up to Bangkok to attend the swimming championships, and had this to say about the school’s performance in the pool:
“It was a privilege to watch such an amazing team performance with outstanding athletes. Many congratulations to the entire BISP Flying Fish team on their record-breaking achievements.
“But it wasn’t only the swim performance that impressed me, it was also the team spirit and support they gave to each other, across all age groups.”
