Report by BISP RPT Tennis Academy Head Coach Lee Austrin

From 1-3 April 2016, British International School, Phuket (BISP) proudly hosted the first ever BISP Tennis 4s tournament.

As well as BISP, three international schools from Bangkok took part in the three day event: Bangkok Patana School, Harrow International School Bangkok, and St. Andrews International School Bangkok.

Each school fielded their strongest players in each category, and over the weekend there were 68 children competing in over 120 matches, with boys and girls competing in four events in 13 & Under and 15 & Under categories.

BISP RPT Tennis Academy Head Coach Lee Austrin says, “Firstly I would like to congratulate all the players for representing BISP so well and with real sportsmanship.

“I am really proud of every player and especially the way they conducted themselves over this weekend. I’d also like to thank all the parents who helped out or came and supported the event. I heard nothing but positive comments throughout.

“The support staff, coaches and BISP RPT Tennis Academy Director Jeff LaMantia also showed great support throughout the tournament, and it couldn’t have been done so well without them. Giving up weekends to help and support our tennis academy students shows what a great team we have, all working together for the good of the school.

“For us, as a school, to be strongly competing against two of the most successful tennis school teams in Thailand was real evidence of how far we have come in just 15 months. Both Patana and Harrow have tennis programmes that have been up and running for over 10 years, and have been dominating national school competition tennis events.”

Of the eight possible finals, BISP were champions in four of them, namely the 13 & Under Boys and 13 & Under Girls, and also the 15 & Under Boys and 15 & Under Girls consolation winners. BISP also took one runner-up, two 3rd places, and three 4th places.

“In a fantastic showcase for BISP tennis, we came second of four in the Strength in Depth award for girls, and first of four in the boys,” says Coach Austrin. “In the Overall award, in a sign of our rapid progress, we were the most successful school and came first in the boys, and second in the girls. It’s worth noting that we had the youngest team by a long way, with many of our team playing players aged anywhere from one and six years older.

“I’d also like to mention 13 year-old BISP student James van Herzeele, who had to miss the BISP Tennis 4s to compete in the Under 16 Thai Nationals,” adds Coach Austrin. “James did very well to pass through qualifying and win his first round match yesterday. He now meets the number two seeded player tomorrow. Good luck with the match James, it’s a really great achievement to be playing a national tennis event an age group up!”

BISP RPT Tennis Academy Director Jeff LaMantia adds, “It was an amazing three days of intense competition between some of the top school tennis teams in the country. I’m very proud of every one of our players who competed in the very first BISP Tennis 4s, and winning the overall title is recognition of the hard work everyone has put in to the BISP RPT Tennis Academy. This can be a stepping stone to even greater achievements on the national and international stage.

“I’d also like to thank everyone in the BISP community who came together to make this tournament a success, including parents – who were amazing cheerleaders – the coaches, volunteers, and the events, marketing and support teams.”
