This month has seen four BISP/RPT Centre of Excellence tennis players take part in the Sri Lankan Junior Nationals.
Lahiru Nettasinghe (Matheesha) took part in the Under 12s and unfortunately drew the number 2 seed first round and lost 6-2, 6-1.
Oshini Herath took part in the girls under 18s and lost out in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-0 to an American opponent.
Ten-year-old Vichi Nilaweera took part in the Under 12s and did very well by beating the no.2 seed in the semifinals, before losing out in the final to the no.1 seed 6-0, 6-1. It was not to be Vichi’s day as he had recently beaten this opponent several times before but proved too strong on this day. Vichi was a winner at the U-14 Doubles event alongside Chathu. With a year left in this age group, Vichi should be pleased with his achievement.
Twelve-year-old Chathu Nilaweera did extremely well in becoming National Champion for the first time in the boys Under 14 event, eventually winning the final 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Great achievement and again with a year left in this event. Chathu was also the semi-finalist in the Under 16 event as well as a winner in the U-14 Doubles event alongside Vichi.
