A combined BISP Girls team beat QSI Senior Girls 4-1 at the weekend. The BISP squad consisted of 3 Senior Girls (Siska, Marla and Jasmine), 6 U15s (Shayla, Kayleen, Jina, Becky, Jana and Georgina), and 1 U13 player (Christina).
Considering this was the first time this team had played together, the performance was excellent, with great teamwork, fine passing and lots of shots on target.
We knew from our previous games against QSI that their goalkeeper was their strongest player and this was true again as she saved shot after shot from BISP.
However, halfway through the first quarter, BISP made the breakthrough with an excellent crisp low shot from Jina Kirby into the bottom right-hand corner. The score after the first quarter was 1-0 to BISP.
The second quarter QSI had more of the ball and the strain of playing with only 1 defender was beginning to show. QSI equalised with a fine low shot after a breakaway.
It looked as if the half-time score would be level until Jasmine scored with a powerful right foot shot high into the top corner of the net, giving their keeper no chance.
The half-time score was 2-1 to BISP. At halftime Kayleen and Shayla had to leave to catch a flight to the USA, so we were left with only 1 substitute for the remainder of the game. The girls showed their excellent fitness for the final 30 minutes by dominating the rest of the game with wave after wave of attacks.
Despite having about 80% of the possession in the third quarter, BISP could not force a breakthrough as the QSI goalkeeper excelled again. The score after the 3rd quarter remained 2-1.
BISP girls again dominated much of the possession in the final quarter and Jasmine was seeing a lot of the ball. She was receiving some rough treatment from the QSI defenders as she bamboozled them with her speed and trickery.
One of her runs resulted in a penalty as she was upended in the penalty area. She dusted herself off and took the penalty but unfortunately blasted high over the bar.
Soon BISP were 3-1 up with a close range effort form Georgina who was following up a shot that the goalkeeper could not hold onto. Minutes later BISP were 4-1 in front with a fine low shot from Georgina from outside the penalty area.
The match ended 4-1 to BISP and there were a lot of positives to be taken from this performance. Coach Jonathas was able to give some advice to the girls during the game and as the match progressed the girls showed that they had heeded this advice by passing more accurately and making better decisions when on the ball.
There are areas for improvement, which can be worked on in training, especially our movement off the ball and our use of space to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses.
All in all this was a very good performance from a team playing together for the first time and the victory was thoroughly deserved.
