Some of Phuket’s enthusiastic young gymnasts had the opportunity to put their flexibility, strength, balance and focus on display, all while having fun, at the 2nd Annual Phuket Gymnastics In-house competition, held at the British International School, Phuket (BISP).
Twenty-two artistic gymnasts, aged between four and 11, competed in three different categories – Mini Squad, Intermediate/Advanced and Competition. The overall winners were Sienna (Mini Squad) Freddie (Intermediate/Advanced) and Thea (Competition).
The gymnasts competed on the floor, vault, bars and beam using the Australian Levels System, which is used in all major clubs in Bangkok and Singapore, as well as in schools throughout South East Asia. Everyone received a participation medal, and the top three in each category received a gold, silver or bronze.
For many of the gymnasts, it was their first time participating in a competition. Phuket Gymnastics coach, Lauren Ault, says: “This was a friendly, inclusive event for gymnasts of all levels and ages. All of them did really well and it was a great opportunity for parents to see what their children have been learning in the programme.”
“Several gymnasts had only been training for a few months, but really enjoyed the experience.”
In December, nine gymnasts in the Competitive team travelled to Bangkok for the Bambi Games. A month later, the team also competed at the FOBISIA Gymnastics Invitational at Harrow International School Bangkok. A group of gymnasts will be competing at the Moose Games at the Thai Canadian Community Sports Centre in Bangkok this weekend and also at their first international competition, the Friendship Meet, in Singapore at the end of April.
