This week the Intensive English Course (IEC) students participated in an educational outing to Jungceylon. The purpose of the visit was to give them the opportunity to interview individuals outside of the British International School’s community by utilising their developing speaking and inquisition skills. During the course of the day, the students spoke English with tourists and shopkeepers, as well as practiced ordering food at a restaurant and viewing another school’s art exhibit. All of the students were apprehensive about speaking with strangers, who at times were neither friendly nor accommodating, but as the different exercises unfolded, each gained an increased sense of confidence and assertiveness. The enhancement of these abilities should prove to be useful as they progress closer towards English language proficiency.
