For the last six weeks, BISP School Counsellor Marie McIntyre has been running two parenting workshops for the parent community at British International School, Phuket (BISP), with a total of 49 parents attending.

The Talk Less Listen More (TLLM) course had a total of 28 parents, while the Engaging Adolescents (EA) course had 35 parents in total, with 14 parents doing both courses.

Being a parent is possibly the hardest job we have in our life. With that in mind Marie wanted to offer some support and knowledge of ways we can resolve difficult situations arising in parenting.

The workshops have looked at natural child development, both physical and psychologically; understanding children’s concepts of the world; learning tools when our children don’t behave as we would like them to do; and how staying cool, collected and calm as a parent is a major contribution for a positive family life.

The workshops have been a positive meeting time for the parents attending, and a forum to share experiences and knowledge with each other.

Marie is looking to run these workshops in the next academic year again for other parents that would like to attend.

These are some comments from parents who attended the courses:

We have already tried the pasta method and it worked!

This really helps me with my parenting. Thank you so much!

This course will really help me with my 8 year old daughter.

This course will help all parents learn to be a better role model for their children.

Great course on parenting strategies and improving understanding and relationship with children.

It is very practical and useful, other parents would also benefit from it.

It was a really good course for me as a parent and it helped me to recognise how to deal with it and going in the right directions.

Parents need help from professionals in parenting, even doing it all correct, the course made us more self aware, motivate us and make us think more.
