After having waited months for the Senior Games, the 6th of February finally came and it was time to travel up to Pattaya.
The girls football team and the boys basketball team were up to compete first on the 7th of February, the first day of the games. After months of hard training under the guidance of our coach, Mr Stockings, our senior girls football team was ready to take on the day.
We started our tournament off with a bang, winning our first game against Regents 2 7-0, with goals from Victoria (Y9), Nina (Y13) Jasmine (Y13) and defender Esme (Y13).
We went on to win all our group stage matches, 2-0 against Garden International School Rayong and 1-0 against St. Andrews Bangkok with a last minute goal from Georgina (Y10). This put us at the top of our pool, ready to face off against Shrewsbury in the semi final.
After a disappointing loss on penalties to them in the fight for third place in the Soccer 7s, we were determined to prove our dominance. And we did just that, keeping our heads held high and making a come back to win the game 3-1 from a 1-0 Shrewsbury lead.
We were confident going into the final against St. Andrews Bangkok after having just beat them in the group stages. We took the lead in the first half of the game though they quickly made a come back in the second half.
Both teams continued to attack, amazing saves were made by Siska (Y12), courageous Jennifer (Y10) put her injuries on the line and defended brilliantly. Marla (Y13) and Anjalee (Y11) continued to work their socks off.
We fought hard through injuries until the very last minute of the second half and extra time but with both teams determined to take home the gold, the score remained 1-1. This took us into the dreaded penalty shootout in which we lost 1-3.
Although we were unable to bring home the gold, the senior girls football team played with quality, intensity, passion and so much heart, we even had coaches coming up to us and saying that the way we played football was unlike anything they’ve ever seen from other girls teams.
For that I believe we came out champions.
Overall, the whole experience was amazing, one in which we will cherish and long hold near and dear to our hearts.
A big thank you to the Sports Department for making the trip happen and special thanks to Mr LaMantia, Mr Stockings, Ms Gates, Ms Hossack, Mr Blake, coach Björn-Erik and coach Jonathas for taking great care of us, we could not have done it without your guidance and support!
