On 26 February 2016, two junior basketball teams from British International School, Phuket (BISP) travelled to Singapore to take part in the inaugural U14 Peninsula Sports Federation (PSF) basketball tournament.

The event featured a high standard of competition, with 8 teams participating from around Singapore and Thailand, including UWCSEA, the Australian School Singapore and the Singapore American School.

Made up of mainly Year 7 and 8 students, BISP’s two sides were the youngest in the tournament. Their aim was to play hard and fair and improve with every game. And the students did just that, proving to themselves and everyone watching that they have good potential for future tournaments.

The girls’ team, coached by Mrs Gates, just missed out on a playoff spot in the semifinals, having surprised a number of larger schools with their aggressive, gritty defensive play. They finished with a comprehensive victory over St Andrews Bangkok 23-2 in the lower playoffs.

Despite being clearly outsized with four Year 7s in the starting line-up, the boys’ team coached by Mr Blake showed encouraging progress and a great attitude both on and off the court.

Thank you to Mrs Gates and Mr LaMantia for all your great coaching and support on this trip.
