For the past three years Mr. Mark’s Year 9 English classes have been recording personal Family of War Stories, as told by each student speaking directly into the camera in stark black and white videos.
These were done whilst studying a unit on various representations of war. Students had to conduct research into their own families; interviewing relatives who were involved in a war or someone who knew them, if now deceased; reading up on the wars referred to.
For many it was revelatory; a discovery into their family history that had been previously unknown to them.
It personalised the unit for them, made it more relevant. They know now, that in one way or another, war affects us all.
