Over the weekend British International School, Phuket hosted the fifth annual Challenge Cup basketball tournament. This year the competition featured schools from Phuket and Phang Nga.
The BISP senior boys’ team progressed to the semi-finals in style for the first time in three years. In their final pool game against Satree Phuket, scores were tied at the end of regulation time and again at the conclusion of extra time. Leon Carpenter provided the game winning shot during a period of ‘Golden Basket’ to ensure that BISP went through to the semi-finals. In that match, however, BISP lost out to Thai Hua 30-17.
The senior girls’ team defeated Phuket Wittayalai 39-4 during pool play, but two close losses versus Satree Phuket and Kajonkiet Suksa saw them miss a place in Saturday’s final. While the team was disappointed not to make the finals, Head Coach Mr Blake felt they played much better basketball than in previous tournaments.
“The girls utilized their fast break and showed improved ball movement to create better scoring opportunities. We will need to make a few adjustments on defence and then we should stand a good chance at Senior Games in Pattaya,” he added.
Both teams depart for Pattaya next week for Senior Games, where they will meet top international schools from throughout Thailand and Malaysia.
