The current Year One topic is “Materials”. The children are investigating the properties of different everyday materials in order to better understand material properties such as opacity, absorbency, strength and elasticity, etc. This week they have been looking at absorbent materials. To help focus their thinking they performed the ‘walking water’ experiment where tissues absorb coloured water from one jar and transfer some to another jar to mix over time, and produce new colours.

They also had fun running during their sponge race; where they, as teams, transferred water from one container to another using large sponges. It was a close run with only a centimetre difference in levels of water transferred between the teams. Sportsmanship and fun were definitely the winners on this day and most of the children were mostly dry by the finish too.
