BISP students and staff came together to celebrate Wai Kru, one of Thailand’s most meaningful school traditions and an important occasion in the BISP calendar.

Wai Kru is often understood as an opportunity for students to express gratitude and respect for their teachers. But the tradition carries a deeper meaning. It is also a moment for teachers and teaching assistants to reflect on their responsibility to support the children in their care, build positive relationships and provide them with the best possible opportunities to learn and grow.

A School Community Comes Together

Across BISP, this year’s Wai Kru celebrations brought students and staff together through traditional elements of the ceremony, alongside music, performances and contributions from students of different ages.

At the heart of the celebrations was the relationship between students and the people who teach and support them each day. Students expressed their respect and appreciation through the traditional presentation of flowers and the Wai Kru vow, while performances and shared moments throughout the ceremonies brought the wider school community together.

The celebrations also reflected BISP’s connection to Thailand and the importance of giving students from many different backgrounds the opportunity to experience and understand the traditions of the country they call home.

More Than Saying Thank You

While Wai Kru is a time for students to express their gratitude, it is equally an opportunity for educators to reflect on the trust placed in them and the role they play in each child’s development. The positive relationships built between students and their teachers every day are at the heart of this responsibility and of the Wai Kru tradition.

A special thank you goes to the BISP Thai Department, whose care, dedication and pride in sharing Thai culture and traditions made this year’s Wai Kru celebrations so meaningful. Their work continues to play an important role in connecting our international community with the culture of the country we call home.
