Girls’ football at BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy continues to create opportunities for students to challenge themselves, pursue ambitious goals and grow both on and off the pitch. Within the Football Academy, every player’s journey is unique, shaped by different experiences, ambitions and aspirations.

For Audrey, football began in the Philippines, spending hours playing with her brothers before proudly representing her country at youth level. Mika’s story followed a very different path. She didn’t discover football until the age of 11, proving that there is no single timeline for success. Growing up in Liverpool, Bonnie was surrounded by football from an early age before continuing her journey in Thailand through BISP and senior women’s football. Meanwhile, as a BISP Football Scholar, Mathilde has balanced the demands of the IB Diploma Programme with high-performance football, demonstrating the commitment and organisation required to thrive both academically and athletically.

Different backgrounds. Different dreams. Different pathways. Yet after speaking with all four students, one thing became clear. None of them described football through the goals they had scored, the trophies they had won or the matches they had played.

Instead, they spoke about who football had helped them become.

More Than the Final Score

Looking at where these four young women are today, it would be easy to focus on the achievements. International football, senior club football, scholarships and university opportunities all tell part of the story.

But none of the girls saw those as their greatest successes. Instead, they spoke about learning to stay disciplined when balancing demanding schoolwork with daily training, finding confidence through difficult moments and discovering that progress is built over time rather than overnight.

Looking back on her own journey, Audrey believes one lesson has shaped her more than any other.

I would always choose hard work and consistency over talent because that’s where you really see yourself improve.

Having started football later than many of her teammates, Mika hopes younger players remember that motivation isn’t always enough.

Do it tired. Do it unmotivated. Just continue doing it, and it will pay off.

Together, their reflections remind us that the biggest victories often happen long before match day.

Growing Through the Game

Each journey has brought its own challenges. For some, that meant adapting to the intensity of international football. For others, it meant balancing elite sport alongside demanding academics, recovering from injury or learning to trust themselves in unfamiliar environments.

As Mathilde prepares to begin her next chapter after graduating from BISP, she offers a simple piece of advice that reflects all four journeys.

More Than a Team

Although each student’s ambitions are different, one theme appeared in every conversation: community.

Football introduced them to teammates who became close friends, coaches who challenged and supported them, and an environment where everyone worked towards shared goals while celebrating one another’s successes.Those relationships became just as valuable as the football itself.

Whether in training, boarding, the classroom or competition, they described a community that encouraged them to keep improving—not only as athletes, but as people.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Today, each of the four students is following her own path. Audrey continues to develop through the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy while proudly representing the Philippines at youth level. Mika continues to balance the demands of the IB Diploma Programme with her ambitions of studying exercise science in the United States, while working towards the highest level of football possible. Bonnie continues to gain valuable experience in Thailand’s women’s football system while working towards a future that includes both playing and coaching. Meanwhile, Mathilde leaves BISP as a Football Scholar, taking with her the resilience, leadership and discipline developed through years in the Academy as she begins university in Switzerland.

Their destinations may be different, but they all began with the same decision: to step onto the pitch.

For younger girls in the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy, their stories are a reminder that football is about much more than the final whistle. It builds confidence, teaches resilience, creates lifelong friendships and opens doors to opportunities that extend far beyond the game itself.
