Last week, the BISP community came together to celebrate Loy Krathong, one of Thailand’s most cherished cultural festivals. This year’s celebration was observed in a more reflective manner, honouring the life and legacy of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, whose vision helped preserve and elevate Thai craftsmanship, traditional arts and cultural identity.

Primary Loy Krathong Celebrations

Although the Primary School celebration was held in a modest way to show respect, the sense of tradition and community remained as strong as ever. From early in the morning, parents gathered in great numbers to help their children create beautiful krathongs, while many students arrived dressed in stunning Thai costumes. The joy and pride shared across classrooms and corridors reflected the spirit of togetherness that defines the BISP community.

The celebration continued with a special Year 6 Assembly, featuring a captivating performance that depicted the history and origin of the Loy Krathong Festival. The play served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of water and a tribute to the Goddess of the River, presented with confidence and grace by the students. Their performance left the audience both impressed and moved.

Secondary Loy Krathong Celebrations

The Secondary School celebrated Loy Krathong honouring Her Majesty the Queen Mother. This year’s event began with a solemn one-minute silence and the Thai Royal Anthem in remembrance, followed by a presentation on the history of the festival.

A highlight of the day was the magnificent showcase of formal Thai national costumes by students from Years 8, 12 and 13, recognising Her Majesty’s lifelong support for Thai textiles. The programme also featured performances of royal musical compositions, including Falling Rain and H.M. Blues, celebrating the legacy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In the lead-up to the celebration, students from each tutor group also had the opportunity to make their own krathongs, culminating in an Eco Krathong Competition that encouraged sustainable practices within this cherished tradition. The event was a meaningful blend of cultural education, musical tribute and heartfelt remembrance.

A Celebration of Thai Heritage

This year’s Loy Krathong encouraged our community to look beyond the beauty of the festival itself and reflect on the values it represents — gratitude, harmony and respect for nature. In honouring Her Majesty’s enduring contribution to Thai culture, BISP continues to recognise the arts, music, dance and craftsmanship as living expressions of national pride and creative identity.

The day was a reminder that while we float lights upon the water, we also carry forward the light of Thai culture — dignified, distinctive and deeply cherished within our school.
