Before students returned to campus for the new academic year, BISP Primary staff came together for a week of professional learning and development. The INSET programme provided an opportunity for teachers to strengthen their subject knowledge, explore new approaches and prepare for the year ahead, with a particular focus on mathematics and oracy.

Strengthening Mathematics Teaching

Teachers across Years 1–6 took part in mathematics workshops led by Simone Dixon from Strive Beyond Numbers, an experienced mathematics specialist and former Maths Leader at Tanglin Trust School in Singapore.

The sessions explored ways to further enhance BISP’s White Rose Maths curriculum, with a focus on adapting teaching to meet the individual needs of students and developing a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Through practical activities and discussion around contemporary maths pedagogy, teachers had the opportunity to reflect on their current practice, share ideas and consider how learning can continue to be strengthened across Primary.

Introducing iSpeak® Oracy in Primary

The week also marked the official launch of the iSpeak® oracy programme in BISP Primary, following a staff training session led by programme founder Pete Fowler.

Oracy, the ability to communicate effectively through speaking and listening, plays an important role in helping children articulate their ideas, engage with others and participate confidently in their learning.

During the session, teachers explored the programme’s practical resources and planned learning experiences around three core areas: confidence, communication and connection.

The introduction of iSpeak® marks the beginning of an exciting new focus on oracy across Primary, supporting students in developing communication skills that extend across subjects and beyond the classroom.

Professional learning is an important part of preparing for each new school year at BISP. By giving our teachers time to collaborate, explore new approaches and continue developing their practice, we can ensure that classroom learning continues to evolve alongside the needs of our students.
