The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s most important and cherished traditions, falls this year on Monday 6 October. It is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest and fullest. Families and friends gather to admire the moon, give thanks for the harvest, and enjoy mooncakes — a traditional pastry symbolising reunion and good fortune. Lanterns are also lit, representing hope and the guiding light of the moon.
Last week, BISP students from Year 3 to Year 13 took part in a range of creative cultural activities designed to bring this tradition to life. Across our three campuses, students:
- Crafted colourful lanterns, including LED lanterns made in Primary.
- Designed flap books that retold the story and traditions of the festival.
- Prepared and tasted snow skin (Bing Pi) mooncakes, a modern twist on the classic festival treat.
These activities were filled with joy, collaboration and creativity, while also giving students a chance to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and honour a tradition that holds special meaning for many in our Chinese community at BISP.
As the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated today, we wish our community a joyful and meaningful occasion.
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival from all of us at BISP!
