Understanding local history helps students develop a deeper connection to the community in which they live. Recently, our Year 5 students had the opportunity to explore Phuket’s rich cultural background through an educational visit to the Peranakan Phuket Museum.

Year 5 students travelled to the Peranakan Phuket Museum to explore the island’s vibrant cultural roots. Throughout the day, they learned about the unique Baba-Nyonya heritage, a distinctive blend of Chinese and local Malay influences that has shaped Phuket’s identity for generations.

Students examined colourful traditional costumes, admired intricate architectural details, and explored the stories of early settlers who contributed to the island’s development. The visit provided valuable historical context and helped students connect their learning to the local community around them.

A highlight of the trip was a hands-on culinary workshop where students made Ang Ku (Red Tortoise Cake), a traditional Peranakan sweet. This delicacy symbolises longevity and good fortune and holds cultural significance within the community. The session allowed students to engage directly with tradition, reinforcing their understanding through practical experience.

The visit offered meaningful insight into Phuket’s multicultural heritage and gave students the chance to experience history in a tangible way. Experiences such as this strengthen cultural awareness and help students appreciate the traditions that shape their local environment.
