We were delighted to welcome Box House Theatre, the company behind Platform Theatre, to our school earlier this term. Students in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 experienced a unique performance that demonstrated the power of storytelling when it is stripped back to its simplest form.
Platform Theatre is Box House’s innovative performance style, which restricts actors to the confined space of a single gym mat. With no props, set, costumes or sound, performers rely entirely on their bodies and voices to create imaginative and engaging theatre. This minimalist approach highlights choreography, characterisation and precision, showing that creativity can thrive under restriction.
Following the performances, Box House Theatre worked with our IGCSE and IB Drama students in a series of practical workshops. These sessions allowed students to explore Platform Theatre techniques in greater depth, encouraging them to experiment with stimuli and develop original pieces. Without the need for props, costumes or elaborate staging, students were able to focus fully on storytelling, movement and collaboration.
The workshops also introduced choreographed movement and sound, helping students strengthen their understanding of physical theatre and ensemble work.
We extend a warm thank you to Box House Theatre for an inspiring experience that encouraged students to think creatively, work collaboratively and discover that sometimes less really is more.
